Scarlett Johansson was born on the 22nd of November, 1984 at New York City New York. She is an American singer/actress whose range has earned her recognition in a variety of kinds of genres, from thrillers to action films to period dramas. Johansson has a father who is a filmmaker as well as an architect. The family is from New York City. Hunter, her twin brother, and she were both the youngest out of a family of four. From a young age she began to develop a passion for acting. She began performing in commercials by the age seven. Soon after she enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and later attended the Professional Children's School in Manhattan for further training in her craft. When she was eight, she appeared together with Ethan Hawke in the Off-Broadway production Sophistry when she was nine. At that age, she made her first film appearance in Rob Reiner's North (1994). Johansson appeared next as a character in Just Cause (1996), but it was Manny & Lo 1996 that gave her her breakthrough. The film tells the story of two girls orphaned by their parents who run away. The Horse Whisperer (2000) where she was the role of a teenage girl who has a deformity caused by an accident, earned an acclaim from critics. In Ghost World 2001 (as the cynical teenage outcast Rebecca) Johansson was awarded even more recognition.
